Before you call
Have the make, model and year ready, and know roughly where the car is. Those three things decide what equipment the van needs on board, and getting them on the phone is the difference between one visit and two.

The remote stopped working. Is it dead?
Usually not. A flat battery is the most common cause by a wide margin, and a fob that has simply lost sync can often be re-paired. It is worth checking those before buying anything.
Can you repair the fob rather than replace it?
Often, yes. Cracked cases, worn buttons and battery contacts are all repairable, and a repair keeps the chip that is already paired to your car — which is the expensive part.
Do proximity keys work differently?
Yes. A proximity or keyless-entry key is in constant conversation with the vehicle rather than sending a one-way signal, so replacing one involves pairing rather than simple programming. It is routine, but it is not the same job.
