Lost Car Keys
Losing every key to a car feels like it should mean a tow truck and a dealership. Usually it does not. A key can be originated from the vehicle itself and taught to the immobiliser on the spot, which means the car stays where it is and you keep the day.
+61-3-9007-2696What this covers
- All keys lost — key originated from the vehicle
- Transponder and immobiliser programming
- Proximity and smart key replacement
- Old keys deleted from the vehicle's memory
- Spare cut at the same visit
- Motorcycles, vans and light trucks
Before you call
Have the make, model and year ready, and know roughly where the car is. Those three things decide what equipment the van needs on board, and getting them on the phone is the difference between one visit and two.
You will also be asked to prove the vehicle is yours — photo ID and registration papers, or the car registered in your name. There is no version of this work where that step is skipped.
Lost Car Keys
Tell us the make, model and year and where the car is parked.
Lost Car Keys — questions
Do you need the old key?
No. A key can be originated from the vehicle's own locks or data rather than copied from an existing one. It takes longer than duplicating a key you still have, which is the honest argument for getting a spare cut before you need one.
What do you need from me?
Photo ID and evidence the car is yours — registration papers, or the vehicle registered in your name. No legitimate auto locksmith will originate a key without it, and one who offers to is telling you something about how they treat other people's cars.
Can the old keys still open the car afterwards?
Not if you ask us to delete them, and on a lost-key job you should. Once the old keys are removed from the vehicle's memory, anybody who finds them has a piece of metal.
How long does it take?
It depends heavily on the make, the model and the year, which is why we ask for all three on the phone. Some are quick; some genuinely take a while. You will be told which yours is before we start rather than while you wait.
